From Kahlenberg to Nussdorf – A Walk through the Vineyards
This is not a big undertaking, but rather a pleasant walk with a stop for refreshments. It is what many Viennese do when the afternoon is still open: up to the Kahlenberg, a stretch down through the vineyards, and then sitting at a wine tavern until it gets dark. The city lies below you along the way. It needs no plan and no equipment, just a few hours.

By taxi or Uber from the city center. Public transport: U4 to Heiligenstadt, then bus 38A.

First under trees, then the view opens onto the vine rows. Downhill all the way.

The Stops
Kahlenberg
This is where the evening begins. From the terrace, the view stretches over the Danube, the city’s rooftops, and far into the plain. A good place to pause briefly before heading downhill.

Wieninger am Nussberg
A Buschenschank in the middle of the vineyards: outdoor tables, cold snacks, wine from organic-dynamic cultivation, and Vienna below in the evening light.

April to October. Thu from 2 PM, Fri and Sat from 12 PM, Sun and public holidays from 11 AM, each until 10 PM.

- StiftStifterl, Eichelhofweg 128. Wine from Klosterneuburg Abbey, same hours as the neighbor. On Saturday afternoons, alpacas sometimes graze in the vineyard.
- Monte Nucum, Eichelhofweg 117. Deck chairs instead of benches, entirely outdoors.
- Windischbauer, on the south slope, in the middle of the vine rows. Only opens on fine weekends, usually from 3 PM.
- Mayer am Nussberg, Kahlenberger Straße opposite 210. Large garden, also warm cuisine.
Heuriger Schübel-Auer
At the end of the path lies Nussdorf, and in its midst, a vintner’s house with a courtyard. The Schübel-Auer calls itself a culture-Heuriger: classic Viennese cuisine, sometimes reinterpreted, accompanied by Grüner Veltliner and Gemischter Satz from their own vineyard. Tram D stops opposite. The station is called Beethovengang, because the composer used to make his rounds here.

Or down in Heiligenstadt
- Mayer am Pfarrplatz, Pfarrplatz 2. Daily from 12 PM, so also when Schübel-Auer is closed. Beethoven lived in this house in 1817 and worked on his Ninth Symphony. Heurigen music plays from 7 PM.
- Kierlinger, Kahlenberger Straße 20. Right next door, with an inner courtyard under two-hundred-year-old lime and chestnut trees.
Good to know
No reservation needed
You simply join in. Up in the vineyards, reservations are not taken anyway, and downstairs, a spot can almost always be found. Only for larger groups is a call worthwhile.
Shoes
The path through the vineyards is a dirt track and can be slippery after rain. If you're not prepared for it, simply walk down Kahlenberger Straße. It's paved and no problem with normal shoes.
Open or not
The Buschenschanken up top are open from April to October, usually Thursday to Sunday and only in fine weather. There are no fixed hours there. Down in Nussdorf and Heiligenstadt, they are open all year round, Mayer am Pfarrplatz daily.
Light
The path through the vineyards is not lit. In summer, it stays light for a long time; in autumn, it's better to start an hour earlier.
Return journey
From Nussdorf, tram D goes directly back to the city center without changing; the station is opposite Schübel-Auer. Taxis can be ordered.
