Imperial and Royal Court Confectioner since 1786. Upon entering, you can smell butter and sugar in the air—and see on the ground floor how fresh Kaiserschmarrn is made daily before visitors’ eyes. The Kaiserschmarrn to go is legendary and equally popular with Viennese locals and guests alike. Here you will find the Sacher competitor, artful marzipan creations, hand-crafted violet pastilles, croissants, doughnuts, and chocolate in historically decorated boxes—a feast for the eyes.

Empress Elisabeth was a regular customer. On the first floor, the coffeehouse invites you to linger; in fine weather, the garden terrace on Kohlmarkt does the same. By the way: At Demel, only female staff have sold and served since the beginning—the so-called Demelinerinnen. Here you are not just buying sweets, but a piece of Viennese history to take home.
