MEETING POINT | Heldenplatz, outer castle gate
Seventeen years that Vienna has never quite let go of. In March 1938 hundreds of thousands cheered on Heldenplatz; a few streets away persecution began for their Jewish neighbours. Then war, bombs, flak towers that still stand in the parks. In April 1945 the Red Army arrived, in summer the Americans, British and French, and for ten years four military policemen rode together in a jeep through a divided city. In those years Carol Reed shot “The Third Man”: the Ferris wheel, the sewers, Am Hof, the zither in the coffeehouse. We walk the sites, tell of the black market and smuggling, of reconstruction and of 15 May 1955, when Leopold Figl held up the State Treaty from the Belvedere balcony.
The Third Man runs through the whole route. Those who want to go deeper finish on Saturday at the Third Man Museum in the Pressgasse, open on that day only.
