Around 1900, modernism in Vienna was out on the street. Adolf Loos built a house opposite the emperor’s palace that the Viennese mocked as the “house without eyebrows”, Otto Wagner put pavilions with marble slabs and golden sunflowers on Karlsplatz for the new Stadtbahn, and the Secessionists wrote above their entrance: “To every age its art. To art its freedom.” This half day combines what would otherwise be two appointments: first the city in which this modernism was born, then the museum where its pictures hang. At the Leopold Museum we stand in front of Egon Schiele’s self-portraits, Klimt’s “Death and Life”, Koloman Moser’s furniture and the glass of the Wiener Werkstätte, and the names from the morning get faces.
Meeting at 10 am on Michaelerplatz in front of the Looshaus. Via Kohlmarkt and the Graben (Otto Wagner’s Ankerhaus, Loos’s Knize tailor’s shop) to the American Bar in the Kärntner Durchgang, past the State Opera that Gustav Mahler directed for ten years, to the Stadtbahn pavilions on Karlsplatz, the Secession and Café Museum, furnished by Loos in 1899. After a short break, with coffee if you like, about two hours at the Leopold Museum and its permanent exhibition “Vienna 1900”. Finish around 2 pm in the MuseumsQuartier.
Guide fee € 445 per tour for up to 4 hours (up to 10 guests) or € 540 for up to 5 hours, plus Leopold Museum admission, € 19 per person. For two guests € 483, for four € 521, admission included.

The Leopold Museum is closed on Tuesdays. On that day, or if Klimt’s “Kiss” means more to you than Schiele, the walk ends at the Upper Belvedere instead, admission € 23 per person. The route then leads from Karlsplatz via Schwarzenbergplatz to the Belvedere. You choose the museum when you book.
With five hours there is time for the Beethoven Frieze at the Secession and a longer coffeehouse break. If you want more architecture, start the day before with “Vienna 1900 on Foot” at the Postal Savings Bank. And for Freud: the Sigmund Freud Museum at Berggasse 19 fits well into the afternoon.

The Leopold Museum tells the story of Vienna 1900 under one roof: Schiele, Klimt, Kokoschka, Gerstl, plus furniture and objects of the Wiener Werkstätte. The Belvedere has Klimt's "Kiss" and the Baroque. Both are possible; you choose when you book.
The Leopold Museum is closed on Tuesdays. On that day we go to the Upper Belvedere and the walk ends there.

Yes, our tours take place in any weather. When it rains we adapt the programme wherever possible and gladly plan a break somewhere dry. In case of a storm we will contact you before the tour and agree together on how to proceed.
