Tour details

One route from the book, half a day in the saddle, and Vienna shows a face you never see on foot.

Martha Tretter rode, noted and rearranged twelve routes for her book „Mit dem Rad durch Wien” (By Bike Through Vienna, Droste Verlag) until every one of them felt right. On this tour you choose one of them and Martha rides it with you: to Klimt’s Art Nouveau, through quiet old town lanes, out to the vineyards and Heurigen or down to the Old Danube. If you are undecided, we recommend the route that suits the season, your fitness and your interests.

Along the way the same rule applies as in the book: getting off the bike is warmly encouraged. For the view, for a look inside a church or a hidden courtyard, for the story behind a facade. And for a break, because every route has a coffee house, a Heuriger or an ice cream parlour that Martha has tried herself. We ride at a neighbourhood pace, mostly on cycle paths and quiet side streets, with time to look and listen.

The twelve routes to choose from

  • 1 · Durch das Herz der Stadt (through the heart of the city, 11.6 km, easy)
  • 2 · Vielfältige Leopoldstadt (many-sided Leopoldstadt, 20.0 km, easy)
  • 3 · Der dritte Bezirk im Fokus (the third district in focus, 14.3 km, easy)
  • 4 · Naschmarkt und Neubau (13.3 km, easy)
  • 5 · Josefstadt und Alsergrund (11.1 km, easy)

Your own bike or a rental
You ride your own bike, or you rent one. In Vienna the easiest option is WienMobil Rad (Wiener Linien, operated by nextbike): around 250 stations across the city, rental via the nextbike app, no registration fee and no Austrian bank account needed. A bike costs 0.80 euros per 30 minutes, at most 20 euros a day; an e-bike 3.30 euros per 30 minutes. Up to four bikes can be rented on one account, and bikes must be returned to a station. That is why we like to start at a WienMobil station near the chosen route and help you with the rental. For groups, or if you prefer to do without an app, we can name a rental shop with comfort bikes and e-bikes.

Also for groups
Up to eight people ride with Martha alone. Larger groups, such as a club, a cycling association or a company outing, are split between two guides so that everyone is safe and relaxed on the road. We agree on the break and the sightseeing stops with you in advance.
