The Kameel has existed since 1618, first as the spice shop of Johann Baptist Cameel. Beethoven was a customer, so were the Habsburgs. Around 1900 the house received its Art Nouveau interior with mosaics and curved wood, and it has kept it ever since.
What makes the Kameel today is the mix: the delicatessen at the front with ham, cheese and wine, the standing tables with the famous sandwiches in between, the restaurant at the back. Lawyers in suits next to students, all with a glass of Grüner Veltliner in hand. A place where Vienna watches itself live.
