Rudolf Leopold was an eye doctor and bought Schiele when nobody wanted him. Today 42 of his paintings hang in the bright limestone building of the MuseumsQuartier, together with Klimt’s “Death and Life”, Kokoschka, Gerstl, Moser and the furniture, glass and fabrics of the Wiener Werkstätte. Your private guide tells of Vienna around 1900, when Freud, Mahler and Loos lived a few lanes apart, of Schiele’s short life and of why one city invented modernism in ten years. A museum you really have seen in two hours.
