Downhill through the Vineyards, Uphill in the Glass

Vienna is the only capital in the world with serious wine-growing inside the city limits, and the best way to grasp that is to walk down from the Kahlenberg. At the top, the view over the Danube, the city and, on a clear day, as far as the Carpathians; then a good hour on foot, all downhill, across the Nussberg with its Grüner Veltliner and Gemischter Satz vineyards to Nussdorf, where Beethoven lived and the Heurigen have poured wine since Joseph II. On the way we taste in the vineyard; at the bottom we sit in the garden with a snack. Your guide tells of the Turkish siege of 1683, decided from the Kahlenberg, of Viennese wine that was once called city wine, and of the Heuriger as a way of life.

Not a hike in the equipment sense: ordinary shoes, paved paths available, no time pressure. In rain it becomes a Heuriger evening in Nussdorf without the walk.

Itinerary

View and history at the top of the Kahlenberg, descent via Kahlenberger Strasse or the field path to the Nussberg, tasting in the vineyard (Wieninger, StiftStifterl or Mayer am Nussberg, depending on the day), on to Nussdorf to the Heuriger with a snack (Schübel-Auer, Kierlinger or Mayer am Pfarrplatz). Return by tram D from Beethovengang or by taxi.

What it costs

Guide fee € 350 per group (3 hrs) plus tasting package € 25 per person for three glasses and a snack. For two guests € 400, for four € 450, all inclusive.
