In 1718 Emperor Charles VI granted the privilege to produce porcelain; Maria Theresa made the manufactory imperial. Since then porcelain has been made by hand in the Augarten: every cup is cast or thrown, every pattern painted with a brush, every Lipizzaner figure assembled from many parts.
The tour leads through the workshops, where you look over the painters’ shoulders, and into the museum with pieces from three centuries. Then the park: the Augarten is Vienna’s oldest Baroque garden, with flak towers, avenues and the palace of the Vienna Boys’ Choir right next door.
