The story

Since 1565 Lipizzaner horses have been trained in classical horsemanship at the Hofburg, in the Baroque Winter Riding School that Fischer von Erlach built for Charles VI. The performances are famous; the morning exercise is the quieter view behind them: horses and riders at their daily work, to music, without the glamour of uniforms.

For groups the Riding School opens its salons: an aperitif overlooking the arena, a tour of the stables and tack room, morning exercise from a box. And, if it can be arranged, a conversation with a rider about how you train a horse for ten years.

A Lipizzaner turns white when it is old enough. Some things in Vienna simply take time.
