Josef Lobmeyr opened his glass shop in 1823; his son Ludwig turned it into an address for the imperial court and Viennese modernism. Adolf Loos designed the drinking set no. 248 for Lobmeyr, still in production today, and Josef Hoffmann the muslin-thin glasses one hardly dares to hold.
The shop on Kärntner Straße has stayed what it was: wooden cabinets, crystal up to the ceiling, one chandelier beside the next. Upstairs is the house museum with designs from 200 years. The Rath family, running Lobmeyr in the sixth generation, is often in the house themselves.
